The adoption of multiparty democracy in 1991 and the constitutional review process opened up more room for women to realize their basic human rights.

Good governance and rights can only be achieved when the fundamental ingredient of gender sensitivity is respected and protected in a country. As such, tenets of good governance, democracy and human rights are only relevant to women if they are actively participating in their realization as well as securing and advancing their unique rights as women.

The SCODA will continue to be a key player in seeking the entrenchment of democratic principles of good governance, human rights and gender equity in political, economic and social spheres.

This program will be guided by the following broad objective:

  • Ensure that national legislation and state policies are responsive to the needs of women and engender collaborative processes with gender commitments in domestic laws and international human rights agreements.

This will be achieved through a number of processes and tools that include:

  • Civic education that should particularly ensure that the election processes encourage the participation of women. The civic education will target at least 30 sub counties.
  • An active role in lobbying and advocacy for around new constitution to maintain the women’s gains represented in it.
  • Awareness creation among Kenya women on the new constitution provisions and other recent affirmative legislative measures so that they are able to make full and immediate use of these rights.
  • The paralegal project, empowering women to access justice and seek legal redress by creating awareness on human and legal rights, provide paralegal- counseling services through community- based counselors and providing paralegal support for administration of justice at the local level. SCODA currently runs paralegal programme in Bondo Sub County but will be expanded to four other counties (Kisumu, Busia, Migori and Homabay) during the life of this strategic plan.
